Maxillary wrap-around retainers are your upper retainers, which are removable. You must be very careful when handling your upper retainers, as they are fragile and costly to replace. You are given a special case for your retainer; please make sure you keep them in this case when not wearing it! To clean these retainers, brush them with toothpaste (and sometimes with denture cleaner) using warm water.

If necessary, corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) treats and corrects these abnormalities. Orthodontic treatment may also be used in conjunction with corrective jaw surgery to align the teeth appropriately. The surgical process includes moving the jaw into its proper position to restore facial balance and improve function.
Tooth Extractions
It's best for the orthodontist to see children by age 7 to advise whether orthodontic treatment is required and what the best time may be for that patient to be treated. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that time and crossbites, crowding and other problems can be evaluated. When treatment is started early, the orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaw and guide incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb sucking and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify later treatment.

Dr. Haleh Azar has practiced the specialty of orthodontics in the Boston metro area for nearly two decades. A long-term Boston resident, Dr. Azar earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Boston College and her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Tufts School of Dentistry. She then pursued an additional three-year specialty program at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where she completed her orthodontic residency and was awarded a Master of Science in Oral Biology. Upon graduation, Dr. Azar was hand selected by the chairperson of the Harvard Orthodontic Department, Dr. Carla Evans, to acquire her distinguished private practice of over 18 years.
