We are pleased to welcome Dr. Wesley Cox to Pediatric Ophthalmology of Erie, Inc. He will join us in early September 2020. He will assist Dr. Nick in providing comprehensive eye health and vision exams to children. Dr. Cox has a strong interest in Pediatrics and specialty contact lens fittings. Dr. Cox received his Bachelor of Science degree in exercise physiology form West Virginia University and his doctorate from Salus University-Pennsylvania College of Optometry. When searching for his next career move, he made it a priority to join a practice that aligned with his professional values. “I wanted to join a private practice that allows me to give my full attention and care to each individual patient, as well as a practice that gives me the freedom and resources to be the best optometrist I can be.” Says Dr. Cox. Pediatric Ophthalmology of Erie, Inc. has presented a great opportunity for me to treat children in Erie. Dr. Cox is from Elizabeth, WV where he frequently visits his family and loves spending time with his niece and nephew. Dr. Cox is a die-hard fan of his alma mater’s athletics, the West Virginia University Mountaineers and used to regularly attend its football and basketball games. Dr. Cox also enjoys the outdoors, including activities such as golfing, fishing and many others.
Primary Care
Our office notifies the Primary Care Physician of the surgery date. Some children with history of asthma, cardiology or hematology diagnosis may need clearance from the specialist. Please notify our office of any special medical needs.

Electrocardiogram
Adult pre-op testing will be evaluated and scheduling orders will be given. Blood work results are good for 30-60 days. EKG/Chest XR is good for 6 months. Results are required 1 week prior to surgery date. Patients with cardiology history, pacemaker or hematology diagnosis may need letter of clearance from the specialist. Please notify our office if any questions.

Ophthalmologists

Glaucoma
Acute infections and inflammatory diseases of the eyes can cause headaches. These problems are usually accompanied by red eye and/or eyelid and light sensitivity (photophobia). Some inflammatory conditions, such as Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), can unknowingly affect the eyes thus requiring periodic exams by an ophthalmologist. Acute glaucoma (angle closure glaucoma) can cause headaches, but rarely affects children. Intraocular pressure checks are indicated for children who are at increased risk to develop glaucoma. This includes use of systemic or nasal steroids, history of trauma or surgery to the eye, and the diagnosis of uveitis (inflammation inside the eye).

Cataracts
Dr. Nicholas Sala has been practicing in Erie for over 20 years. He specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of both pediatric eye diseases and adult strabismus (crossed eyes). He concentrates on surgery to correct strabismus in children and adults, pediatric cataracts and glaucoma, tear duct obstruction and pediatric eyelid abnormalities including ptosis (droopy eyelids) surgery. He also evaluates premature infants for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) at both N-ICUs.
Cataract Surgery
Although our name says Pediatric, we also specialize in adults with Strabismus and Diplopia (double vision). The causes of adult strabismus may include acquired conditions like thyroid/Graves’ disease, neurological problems/Stroke, trauma, retinal detachments, diplopia after Cataract surgery, Myasthenia gravis and Nystagmus. If you are an adult and you had to patch one eye as a child you may eventually develop an eye misalignment. If you find yourself closing one eye to see you may have diplopia and require a prism in/on your glasses or may even need Strabismus surgery. We can help with these conditions. If you know an adult with double vision or a misaligned eye, please tell them we can help.
Eye Exam
A: A child should have their first comprehensive eye exam with dilation around age three. If there is a family history of eye problems eighteen months is recommended.
