Child Support
In Indiana, the emancipation age for a child is 19. Regular child support terminates by law upon the child’s 19th birthday. If timely requested, educational support for a child’s post-secondary educational expenses can be ordered to continue beyond the 19th birthday. If a child turns 19 before there is an order for educational support or a petition for educational support filed with the Court, then all child support will terminate upon the child’s 19th birthday.
Child Custody and Visitation

Paternity
Although some divorce cases involve a lot of conflict and hostility, others may be quite civilized. This is less often the case with paternity cases, which typically involve higher levels of animosity between the parties. Many paternity relationships are of short duration – even one-night stands. There are some cases in which the parties live together for a reasonable length of time before breaking up.
Guardianship
Guardianships may be contested or uncontested. Various individuals may compete for guardianship of a child. Sometimes, a grandparent will seek guardianship over a child whose parent is struggling. Sex Crimes
While a family law practice typically focuses on divorce, custody, parenting time, paternity and other legal issues, at times it also touches on many other aspects of a client’s life. Restraining Order
In Indiana, a party who is a victim of domestic violence, sexual abuse, stalking and/or harassment may apply for an ex parte order of protection (which many people call a “restraining order”). An order of protection may prohibit the abusive party from legally having any contact with the victim, or it may contain other restrictions or exceptions. In general, the order of protection process is set up so that parties will not necessarily need to hire an attorney. Marion County and Hamilton County provide assistance to individuals who need to seek this type of protection, and no doubt help is also available in many other counties.
