The Strulowitz and Gargiulo Physical Therapy practice took its roots in 1955 when Dan Strulowitz opened and self-staffed a small physical therapy office at The Medical Arts Building on Clifton Place in Jersey City. Dan decided to begin his practice after being encouraged to do so by many prominent orthopedic surgeons who had worked with him at local hospitals. In the years that followed, word of the top-notch care being provided at the practice spread throughout the Hudson County community, earning Dan a favorable reputation. In time, the list of patients coming to the office for treatment grew, which required a larger staff to accommodate the new additions, and in 1977, Carl Gargiulo joined Dan after graduating from NYU. With the necessity of a bigger staff came the need for more space, and after Dan and Carl became partners, the practice moved to its present location of 1 Nardone Place in 1984. Though the main operations of the practice were focused on outpatient services within the office, Dan and Carl began to also provide services to patients under various settings from home care to school-based and hospital locations. The expansion of the practice in this style-a broad amount of services to whoever may be in need of them-would go on to become a constant in the years to come. Dan retired from actively practicing physical therapy in 2000 but remained involved in many aspects of the business afterwards. He continued to keep close contact with the staff and many patients he worked with during his retirement years. After a long bout with Congestive Heart Failure, Dan passed away in December of 2004, leaving a legacy of competent, compassionate care and concern for his patients and the community in which he grew up, worked and lived. An endowment has been established in Dan's name at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey to assist Physical Therapy students with tuition costs. Over the years, the scope of coverage and staff at S&G PT have both grown enormously. In late 2007, S&G PT expanded with the opening of a brand new office in Bayonne. The facility now offers the same care available at the main office to residents of Bayonne and surrounding areas, increasing convenience and making treks to therapy less of a hassle for many. In addition to therapy provided at both Nardone Place and the Bayonne office (located at 42nd St. and Avenue B), S&G PT continues to offer home care, hospital-based, school-based and industrial consultation services. Our mission to service all in the area in need of care continues to drive S&G PT towards more expansion and accommodativeness, so as to better serve the community which it is both a component of and provider for.
