Among others, his projects included the establishment of "mini-host" animal models for the study of invasive fungal infections, as well as the study of the immuno-pharmacologic properties of the echinocandins, a new class of antifungals. He and his colleagues accepted the commitment to maintain and develop graduate-training programs in general surgery and all major surgical specialties including neurosurgery, urology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ENT, plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and the surgical subspecialties of pediatric cardiac, transplant, vascular, trauma and surgical oncology.

Prejesh Philips, after graduating top of his class from St Columbas School, completed his medical School at MAMC in New Delhi and started general surgical training there. He did his clinical research on laparoscopic inguinal hernia and the work was published In Surgical Endoscopy. He then completed his inter year at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NY and is currently completing his surgical residency at UTHSCSA. Special interests include MIS and transplant and is hoping to pursue a career in academic medicine.

He is interested in laparoscopic surgery and acute care surgery. After completion of his residency, Dr. Bluhm plans to return to his hometown of Houston to practice general surgery in a private setting.

Congratulations to Dr. Emmanuel Gabriel, UTHSCSA General Surgery Resident, who has been awarded the 2013 J. Bradley Aust Surgical Society Traveling Fellowship. The award will assist Dr. Gabriel during his rotation at MD Anderson, Department of Surgical Oncology, Breast and Melanoma Services. Dr. Gabriel will present his educational experience at the June 2013 annual meeting of the Aust Society.
