Puppies should be fed a high quality puppy food. No matter what kind of food you choose to feed your puppy, look for the AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials) label on the bag. Any dog food that is labeled complete and balanced as regulated by AAFCO must, by definition, contain all the vitamins and minerals required for good health. Puppies can be weaned onto adult formula dog food at the age of 12 months, and for large breeds between 18-24 months. Feeding dry (hard) food along with routine dental care helps to keep teeth free of tartar and decay. In most cases the same diet throughout a dog’s adult life is sufficient. Keep in mind, puppies need more calories than seniors, and older dogs may need nutritional supplements.

AA Vet is the greatest

My husband and I have been going to AA Vet for over 15 years. Dr Autorino is the best. The facility is always clean and does not smell like a vet office. The staff is caring and very friendly. We would not take our pets anywhere else.

Parasites Treatment and Control
A stool sample is checked on the cat's first visit and then every 6 months to insure there are no Hookworms, Roundworms or other intestinal parasites. Tapeworms in cats may not be identified on this exam, however, so it is important to report any worms seen to the veterinary hospital. Any necessary dewormings will be done by either injection or orally, depending on the parasite.

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Puppies may be bathed as necessary. This needs to be done only when dirt, parasites, or skin problems signal the need for bathing. Ask us about veterinary approved shampoos for use in dogs. Human skin and hair products may cause skin irritation or sickness.

Infection Treatment

Leptospirosis Treatment
LEPTOSPIROSIS: Puppies who are spending lots of time outside (camping or hiking), and are in contact with standing water (pounds, swamps, slow brooks) should be vaccinated against this bacteria. This vaccine can be started at 8 weeks of age and needs at least one booster in 2-3 weeks.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
DISTEMPER: (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus): A puppy should start its Distemper vaccinations at 6-8 weeks of age, then be boostered every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks of age. Puppy will need a booster 1 year later, and it lasts for 3 years.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
An adult cat should be vaccinated against Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia, (FVRCP) and Feline Leukemia Virus (FELV). At 12 weeks of age, the kitten receives a Rabies vaccine (RV) which is good for one year. All vaccines must be boostered yearly except the Rabies vaccine, which is boostered every three years after the second booster is given.

Spaying the female and neutering the male should be done in the 4-6 month old cat. This will prevent any unwanted pregnancy as well as help to avoid negative behavior such as spraying or territorial aggression.

Small Animal Vet
Dr. Erin Murray grew up in southern Connecticut. She received her bachelor’s degree in Biology & Biotechnology from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and then went on to obtain her D.V.M. from the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in 2017. She has spent the past two years working as a small animal veterinarian along the Connecticut shoreline but is excited to move north after buying a home in Southington. Erin is eager to join the Double A Veterinary Hospital team and help a new set of clients and their furry family members. In her off time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and family, walking her dogs, playing sports, and doing a variety of crafts.
Equine Vet
Dr. Taryn Gervais Pina is a Connecticut native, born and raised in Hartford County. Taryn completed her undergraduate studies in Biology and Environmental Science at Boston College, and then went on to obtain her D.V.M. from the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. Upon completion of her veterinary degree, Dr. Gervais went on to pursue advanced training in equine medicine through a one-year internship at the New England Equine Medical and Surgical Center in Dover, NH. Thereafter, she practiced as a mixed animal veterinarian, and later an equine veterinarian, before joining the Double A Veterinary Hospital team in 2015. Taryn is thrilled to be joining the practice that her cousins and friends have raved about for years. Outside of work, Taryn enjoys spending time with her husband John, her family, and her friends, playing with her dog Bentley, running, gardening, and traveling when she can.
