Primary Care
For all non-emergency referrals, please contact our office at least one week in advance. For all emergency referrals, please contact our office the following business day. In the event your child may need to see a specialist or may require emergency care, your HMO or POS insurance company requires that you be referred by your primary care physician. If you do not receive authorization from us prior to your visit with a specialist or within the next business day of your emergency care, your insurance company may not pay for the treatment. Our office will not provide authorization for visits retroactively.
Emergency Care
If you need advice for the care of your child or if you believe your child needs urgent care after office hours, please call 770-941-7709 or 770-985-7926. Our answering service will take a message and send it to the Children’s Healthcare Nurse Advice Line and depending on their call volume; you should receive a call within 30 minutes to an hour. If your call is during a high peak time, such as a holiday weekend, it could be two hours before you receive a call back. If you have not heard from anyone within an hour, please call back. If you have caller I.D. and call block, please deactivate it by pressing *87 when awaiting a return call from our office, answering service, or physician on call. This will expedite your receiving a call back. You can reactivate it by pressing *77 after you have heard back from us.
Immunizations
Routine childhood vaccination produced a tremendous decline in serious infections. Lives have been saved and suffering prevented. Before a vaccine was available, nearly everyone developed measles during childhood. Each year in the U.S., about 50,000 were hospitalized, 1,000 cases of permanent brain damage and 500 deaths occurred. Polio paralyzed 20,000 people per year, causing 1,000 deaths. Vaccines do a wonderful job of preventing illness, complications, and saving lives.

Autism
Some people are concerned about mercury preservatives in vaccines. There has never been any scientific evidence that showed a child has been harmed by thimerosal, the mercury based preservative that had been used in vaccines in the past. Major studies in Sweden, Denmark, the United Kingdom, and the United States have shown no association between thimerosal containing vaccines and autism. Other studies provide evidence that MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella ) vaccine does not cause autism. A recent study in California looked at cases of autism and other brain disorders. They compared the diagnosis of autism prior to 2001 (the year thimerosal was removed from vaccines, except some influenza vaccines) with the rate of diagnosis after 2001. If thimerosal in vaccines caused autism, the rate should have fallen after the preservative was removed. The study showed that the rate increased.

Prior to earning his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, he attended Georgia Tech, where he received a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Richards is an advocate for rescue animals and cruelty-free testing. His special interests include sports medicine and general pediatrics.
