The answer to this has to come from the parent, but in collaboration with our office. I often hear a parent apologizing to me after a child is seen in our office and turns out to “only” have a virus. There is never a need to apologize! I know folks don’t want to come in unnecessarily, but there is a reason we have a same-day visit policy at our office. I place a lot of weight on a parent’s intuition. Often a child who may seem on the phone to have a cold, ends up on antibiotic treatment for a mild pneumonia or ear infection once actually examined in the office. On the other hand, a very irritable baby with a cold sometimes has just that, a cold! We are trained to ask you the appropriate questions based on the age of the child, and to evaluate your answers and redirect to more questions in order to help you decide if a visit would be a good idea. This is called medical triage. This website hosts symptom/illness algorithms and medication/dosage schedules developed by a wonderful pediatric expert and author, Barton Schmitt, MD. This is located on the lower left-hand corner of the homepage.

The vaccine safety profiles remain good. Reuters (9/22) reports, “Monday’s announcement from Pfizer and BioNTech that a low dose of their coronavirus vaccine proved safe and effective for children ages 5 to 11 in a clinical trial has come as a relief to many parents anxiously awaiting the chance to protect their children,” but “some parents have expressed hesitancy about the vaccine for their young children, citing the lack of large-scale studies and long-term data on its effects on that population.” Approximately “four in 10 parents of children ages 5 to 11 said they would ‘wait and see’ how the vaccine worked before giving it to their kids, according to polling data published by the Kaiser Family Foundation in August,” while “one-quarter said they would ‘definitely not’ get their children vaccinated” and “another quarter said they would do so ‘right away.’” Sean O’Leary, vice chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ infectious diseases committee, “said there is no reason to expect the vaccine to pose any particular risk for younger children.” He added, “These vaccines have probably been evaluated for safety better than any other medicine in history.”

Our pediatric nurse Alice has been with us for many years and has helped many by sharing her advice and experience on the phone. She is currently working Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. We are fortunate to have pediatric nurse Jina as well. She joined our team in 2018 and she is particularly adept at immunization protocols and digital communication. As a pediatric nurse she also can advise you with her training and experience. Both Alice and Jina continually communicate with me on all medical calls into the office. Sarah handles the front desk and administrative duties. Kelly works off site as our billing and insurance expert.

There are newly revised FDA regulations on sunscreen labeling when you purchase products now. You may notice the term “Broad Spectrum” on the bottle or tube. This indicates good protection against sunburn, skin cancer, and premature skin aging. This is the labeling you want to look for. In addition, the terms “sweatproof,” and “waterproof” are not allowed. Sunscreens MUST be reapplied periodically, and especially after getting wet.
