True to our commitment to green building, our remodeling process involved carefully deconstructing the home and recycling as many materials as possible. During construction, we hired local craftsman Brian Laak of Laak Woodworks to build the custom bathroom vanity, range hood cover, and table. We re-finished the existing wood flooring wherever possible and worked with Wood Wise to acquire matching hardwood in the areas that needed to be replaced.
Door Installation/Replacement
Drywalls
Throughout the home, clean lines and utmost attention to detail rule. We created the appearance of drywall to the floor (no base trim), using a special fry reglet to add durability. Tile adds drama and texture to the design, most notably the three-dimensional tile in the living room, which looks different throughout the day as the light changes.
Framing
Creating the new floor plan was an opportunity to demonstrate our ability to execute even the most detailed and intricate designs. We used extensive steel structural framing to reconfigure the form of the house and roof lines.
Fireplaces
Throughout construction, each detail of the homeowner and designer’s vision was meticulously planned and then executed by our talented team. The resulting 6,247-square-foot home is a real Boulder dream home. It includes a 15-foot-tall library wall with a rolling ladder, four bedrooms, five bathrooms, and a linear gas fireplace with custom surround and hearth made of locally fabricated steel with custom patina.

Cottonwood built our custom home in Boulder and did a fantastic job. They did the whole construction process (from demolition of existing home to delivery) in a year. They are easy to work with and take pride in doing a job well done. Highly recommend them!

We produce incredibly tight buildings with high indoor air quality (which is a problem in some new homes today) by properly air sealing, carefully installing the right insulation, using high performance windows and doors, and installing high performance ventilation. Then we test each home to identify and seal any weak spots. This aspect of green building is about attention to detail and doesn’t significantly increase the cost of construction.

Our renovation of the craftsman bungalow (original home) focused on matching the historic details, from the trim to the stucco to the cedar shake siding. We removed the poorly built addition behind the bungalow and replaced it with a new, energy-efficient addition. The gorgeous design unifies the two sections with a modern take on a gable roof home, with clean lines and warm wood features.

A few years ago “green building” meant installing bamboo flooring shipped from China. Today, it’s a different story. From windows to stone to roofing and siding, we evaluate all materials and recommend greener substitutes that fit with your budget. The greenest materials are the ones that are local and we use those whenever possible. Cottonwood Custom Builders keeps up on the latest technologies and materials and which are most environmentally friendly and local. We have some of the best stone in the world just up the road in Lyons, Loveland and Fort Collins. Beetle kill pine is a beautiful material for a variety of uses. We use rigid foam made in Denver that is 1/3 the cost of DOW blue board. One of the highest performing window brands is based and manufactured in Boulder.

Throughout the entire house, we incorporated green building practices to ensure that the home is healthy and efficient for the family. The new master bedroom, added above the garage, features double framed walls and ample insulation to ensure that the space is comfortable year-round.
