Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) is a common disease in which blood-sugar levels are chronically too high. The disease has many related complications, and several eye diseases among them. The most common eye complication of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of adult blindness.

Ultrasound
During cataract surgery, which is usually performed under local or topical anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Patients are given topical numbing drops and IV sedation, or twilight anesthesia, to ensure that they are comfortable and relaxed for the procedure. During cataract surgery a new lens (intraocular lens), replaces the old lens. Your ophthalmologist performs this delicate surgery by using a small incision and ultrasound energy to break up the cataract. Once the cataract is removed, an artificial lens is then placed into the eye to focus light onto the retina. The entire procedure takes less than an hour. Patients are sent home the very same day and return to normal activities within a couple of days.

Reconstructive Surgery
This is a specialized exam conducted by a opthalmologist who is a sub-specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery of the eyes. During the initial appointment, the physician will exam the condition of the eyelids both upper and lower as well as the brow to determine if further testing is needed to confirm that the eyelid or brow maybe causing a decrease in the "visual field" that the patient is able to see. Usually photos are taken to assist in this determination, as well as possibly ordering a Visual Field diagnostic test. This test will provide a definitive "map" as to whether the patient's field of vision is being obstructed due to excessive skin in the upper eyelid which may also be caused by the burrowing of the brow.
