Bladder Cancer
I went in thinking I had a bladder stone but, after an examination I was told I had bladder cancer. Once I was diagnosed with bladder cancer I had a million questions. Dr. Bevin-Thomas was very straight with me on the treatment options and possibilities. His staff helped me through each phase of the treatments and explained my options and what to expect during and after each treatment. When I first found out, I read a lot on the internet about what to expect. I took all of these questions with me and they were happy to answer them. He chose BCG treatments for my care. He and his staff explained all the possible side effects and outcomes by using this course of treatment. Along with precautions and personal care I would need to take. Their willingness to explain everything to me has helped me to get through this. I’m very grateful for their experience and care during this difficult time for my family.

Kidney Stones
A kidney stone is a solid piece of material that forms in the kidney from substances in the urine. It may be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a pearl. Most kidney stones pass out of the body without help from a doctor. But sometimes a stone will not go away. It may get stuck in the urinary tract, block the flow of urine and cause great pain.
Urinary Tract Infection
By the time Patel’s infection had cleared, Dr. Bloom had a plan for getting rid of the stone. “Trishna’s large calcium-based stone had likely been growing for several years in her kidney, but not blocking the flow of urine,” Dr. Bloom notes. “As a result, she didn’t experience any pain. When a stone suddenly drifts into a position that blocks the flow of urine—combined with a urinary tract infection—sepsis can occur, and that’s what happened to Trishna.”

Ultrasound
Yes! The mpMRI and PI-RADS score will give Dr. Bevan-Thomas detailed information that will help determine whether you need a prostate biopsy and if there is an area to target for the fusion biopsy. Before mpMRI technology, if a doctor suspected cancer, patients would go straight to an ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy. With the mpMRI, if your PI-RADS score is low — meaning low risk for intermediate or high-grade cancer — you may not need a biopsy.
MRI
A cancer diagnosis is scary, no doubt about it. You’ve had your MRI, your biopsy results are in, and your head is probably spinning.
X-Rays
Computed Tomography
IMRT is a high-precision form of external-beam radiation. It works from a 3D CT-scan image that makes it possible for the radiation oncologist to see precisely where to aim the beams. Complicated computer algorithms then control the radiation doses.
Radiation Therapy
IMRT stands for intensity-modulated radiation therapy. But don’t worry — you won’t need to memorize that! We’ll just call it IMRT.

Dr. Bevan-Thomas graduated from Duke University and earned his medical degree at St. Louis University School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery internship and urologic surgery residency at the University of Texas Houston Health Science Center and MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Robotic Surgery
Remember the IPSS questionnaire. These 100 gram-plus sized prostates are twice the size of the average prostate and usually require a different approach. Dr. Bevan-Thomas specializes in robotic surgery, so he has you covered. Dr. B-T has removed prostates up to 6 times the average size!
Laparoscopy
Dr. Bevan-Thomas uses the daVinci robot for most of his surgeries and for all of his simple/partial prostatectomy surgeries. Despite any preconceived notions you may have of robots, the daVinci robot does not physically do the surgery; it merely acts as a way for the surgeon to control the laparoscopic instruments. Fortunately, in 2020 A.D., most people have heard of laparoscopy. Laparoscopy is simply using a scope through small keyhole incisions to look inside the abdomen. Unfortunately, the instruments we use for this are like chopsticks.

Laparoscopic Surgery
Similar to any laparoscopic surgery, the keyhole incisions heal themselves. Dr. B-T recommends not lifting anything heavy for the first four to six weeks after the procedure to minimize the risk of developing a hernia.

Lesions
A multiparametric prostate MRI is accurate for finding intermediate and high-grade cancers around 85% of the time. A negative MRI does not always mean that a biopsy is not recommended, but it is extremely helpful in finding lesions to target. There is roughly a 15% chance of having a focus of cancer not seen on the MRI, so other parameters are often used in terms of recommending a course of action. Ultrasound continues to have a role in diagnosing many prostate cancers.
