Barry Cohen is a former President of the Criminal Law Section of the State Bar of Wisconsin. Attorney Cohen was recently re-appointed by the Supreme Court of Wisconsin to assist the Office of Lawyer Regulation with oversight of individual lawyers.
DUI/DWI
The Annual Drunk Driving Defense Seminar is an educational and social event organized by Attorney Barry Cohen and sponsored by his law firm. The seminar is considered a “must attend” for any attorney representing clients in drunk driving offenses, whether you have tried 100 cases or are preparing for your first jury.. Top practitioners present in an informal, workshop-like atmosphere, allowing for excellent audience participation. Plenty of opportunities for informal networking with attendees abound, as well as social events to discuss issues and cases with presenters. The seminar is generally presented on the Monday and Tuesday of the week before Thanksgiving. Seminar program schedule and registration information are generally available by August 1.
Traffic Violations
Illinois client was charged with Speeding 45 miles over the limit. Outcome: Charge was reduced and nothing appeared on the Illinois driving record.
Misdemeanors
Client was charged with OWI-5th, a felony, which occurred while the client was on probation for his 4th OWI. To complicate the case, the client was arrested shortly after a traffic accident and had a revoked driver’s license. Outcome: Attorney Cohen successfully amended the charge to OWI-4th, a misdemeanor, avoiding the felony consequences and a likely prison sentence for his client.
Homicide
Shoplifting
Client was a local businessman and very concerned about loss of his reputation in the community if convicted of the charge. Outcome: Attorney Cohen was able to have the charge dismissed.
Hit and Run
Client was charged with felony Hit and Run Causing Injury for allegedly striking a 13-year old pedestrian in a crosswalk with a vehicle. At the Preliminary Examination, Attorney Cohen brought out that the incident occurred at night and the victim was wearing dark clothing. Despite the fact that the client had stopped twice to check behind him, and later acknowledged to police that he knew he had hit something. Outcome: Attorney Cohen was successful in getting the charge dismissed.
Client had a CDL and was charged with Hit and Run Causing Property Damage. Client paid the ticket before consulting an attorney and the received an Order for Disqualification to Drive CMV due to the conviction. Client hired Attorney Cohen who was able to reopen the conviction, lift the Order for Disqualification, and ultimately amend the charge to a non-reportable offense.
