Dental Examination
Dr. Stephenson recommends regular cleanings and exams for all adults. The interval between cleanings is usually between 3 and 6 months, depending on the individual rate each patient accumulates plaque or calculus, and the level of inflammation or bleeding present. The interval between periodic exams is usually once per year.
X-rays
Dental x-rays are an important diagnostic tool to check for decay and damage that is not visible during an exam. Digital x-rays in our office utilize very low levels of radiation. A full series of 18 dental X-rays has 20 times less radiation than one year of normal background radiation from the environment. The 4 bitewing X-rays taken during dental check-ups have 79 times less radiation than a year of normal background radiation. To further minimize radiation exposure, we use a leaded apron and collar shield to protect your body. Dr. Stephenson generally recommends a full series of x-rays taken every 3 to 5 years and bitewing x-rays once per year for most adults.
Oral Cancer Screening
At your initial visit in our office, we usually recommend a complete, comprehensive examination. This is a thorough examination of your gum tissue and teeth. All surfaces of your teeth will be checked for any sign of problems including decay or fracture. Dr. Stephenson will also check your existing dental restorations such as crowns and fillings to make sure they are not in need of replacement. During the exam, Dr. Stephenson will perform an oral cancer screening to check the lips, throat, tongue and gum tissue for any sign of oral cancer. Your gums and bone around the teeth will also be checked for any sign of disease. Dr. Stephenson is able to give you solutions for all of your dental needs and options for any necessary treatment.

Teeth Cleaning
Professional dental cleanings are an important part of a program to prevent gum disease and help you keep your teeth for a lifetime. Adults over 35 lose more teeth to periodontal (gum) disease than to decay. The best way to prevent periodontal disease is to have professional cleanings on a regular basis and to practice good oral hygiene with daily brushing and flossing techniques that are recommended by Dr. Stephenson and your hygienist. Good oral hygiene can also help promote a healthier life. Recent studies strongly suggest a link between the bacteria that causes periodontal disease and some systemic diseases. For your continued health and wellness, it is very important to complete any recommended periodontal treatment as soon as possible. Sealants protect the vulnerable areas by sealing out plaque and food and acting as a barrier to prevent cavities. A sealant creates a smooth, easy to clean surface.

Fillings
Composite fillings are often preferred because they can be closely matched to the color of your existing teeth. For this reason, they are more aesthetically suited for use in front teeth or the more visible areas of the teeth. Composite fillings are very durable and can be used in any area of the mouth. Composite fillings are different from amalgam fillings because they are bonded to the tooth. This process makes the composite filling very strong and often allows for less tooth structure to be removed when preparing the tooth for the filling. As with all dental restorations, they need to be checked on a regular basis.

Crowns
Crowns are used to restore teeth that have fractured or decayed when a filling is no longer an option. They are also used for cosmetic purposes when a patient would like to restore their smile with natural looking porcelain crowns that can reshape teeth to cover chips, stains, and old fillings. Crowns cover the entire visible surface of your tooth and add durability and strength.
Bridges
Fixed Bridges are used to replace spaces from missing teeth. A fixed bridge is permanently cemented and looks just like your natural teeth. Because all of your teeth are important in speaking, chewing and maintaining proper alignment, it is important to replace missing teeth. A fixed bridge is a great solution for restoring your smile while maintaining functionality. The process of a fixed bridge is very similar to a crown. The teeth next to the space from the missing tooth are prepared for “abutment crowns” by reducing the tooth enamel and taking an impression to be sent to the lab, where the bridge will be constructed. The permanent bridge will have abutment crowns on both sides of the missing tooth that are attached to a false tooth or “pontic” which replaces the missing tooth. At the final appointment, the bridge is permanently cemented and the patient no longer has a space from the missing tooth. Bridges can be constructed with gold alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials.

Deep Cleaning
In addition to practicing good oral hygiene, Periodontal Maintenance therapy is recommended every few months to clean your teeth and maintain the health of your pockets. These appointments will focus on preventing further progression of periodontal disease. Periodontal Maintenance is more extensive than a “regular cleaning”, and sometimes referred to as a “deep cleaning”. It’s typically done on patients who need areas below the gum surface thoroughly cleaned and scaled because of pockets that are deeper than those found in patients without gum disease.
