Preventive Care

Dental Care
Bad breath and possibly drooling or frequent licking may be the first signs. Inflammation of the gums (redness) with possible bleeding or obvious tartar buildup may be noted on an oral exam. Pus may be noted around teeth or from sores on the muzzle in advanced cases. Some pets may just not be doing well due to fighting the chronic infection and pain associated with dental disease.

Veterinary Ophthalmology
Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in middle aged dogs. It is defined as an abnormal buildup of fluid inside the eye. The buildup occurs when fluid does not drain properly through a filter between the cornea and sclera. This increase in fluid can destroy the retina and the optic nerve which can quickly cause blindness.
Nutritional Counseling
Most dogs with heartworm infection do not show signs of disease. Some vague symptoms may include decreased appetite, weight loss, and lethargy. Often, the first sign of the disease is a cough. Animals with severe heartworm disease will be exercise intolerant. Some dogs will look "pot-bellied" from fluid accumulating in their abdomen. Occasionally, dogs may have many adult worms, and can die of sudden heart failure.

Parasites Treatment and Control
Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitos. The infection used to be most prevalent in the southeastern United States. Today, however, heartworm is found throughout the country and continues to increase in incidence in Colorado. Heartworms are found in dogs, cats, ferrets and can also occur in wild animals such as foxes, coyotes and wolves.
Pain Management
Treatment can vary according to the severity of the bite and may include performing bloodwork, hospitalizing the patient and performing intravenous fluids. Antibiotics are often used to treat secondary infections from the bacteria in the snake's mouth, and pain medication is commonly given as well. Antivenin may also be used as well to counteract the effects of the venom depending on the signs that the patient is showing and the severity of the bite.

Drinking - Don't let Fido drink from the pool- there are a lot of chemicals in the water that may upset his stomach. Also, keep Fido away from the pond and stream water- there may be bacteria and parasites that can lead to gastrointestinal irritation, such as Giardia and Leptospirosis.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) are the most common infectious diseases of cats. The Larimer County Humane Society is no longer testing for either disease. Testing and identifying positive cats is the only way to stop the continual spread of this fatal disease. It is recommended that all cats should be tested, especially new cats entering a household. Ideally this test should be repeated in 60 days with limited cat exposure during that time.

Dental disease is the number one disease problem in cats and dogs. Although cats and smaller dogs have the highest incidents of periodontal disease, 95% of all dogs and cats will have some form of dental disease in their lifetime, many more than once.

Wound and Fracture Care
FELV is often referred to as the “friendly cat disease.” It can be transmitted through prolonged casual exposure to infected cats. Types of exposure can include grooming, sharing food dishes, and urine/fecal contamination. FIV is often called the “fighting cat disease” as it is mostly transmitted through infected cat bite wounds. Both of these diseases can be passed from the mother to the kittens.

Simple blood tests can be used to find out the FELV/FIV status of cats and kittens. It is recommended that all kittens be tested for both FIV and FELV at their initial examination with your veterinarian. Older cats may also be tested depending on their lifestyle and risk factors. It is also common to test for these diseases in sick cats.

We offer a wide range of dental procedures, including dental cleanings (with ultrasonic scaling and polishing), extractions when required, and dental radiography.
Microchipping
With everyone coming and going, watch out for open doors and sneaky pets. Make sure your pets have updated collars and tags on in case of escape. Microchipping your pet will also help if your pet escapes. All pets should have at least two forms of id on them at all times. Ask guests to keep an eye out for pets under foot and remind them that sometimes your normally friendly dog or cat may be less than willing to deal with enthusiastic children and rooms full of unfamiliar people. Provide a special quiet place with a blanket and fresh water for your pets to retreat to when the festivities get too stressful.
