Ultrasound
There are several different methods surgeons use when performing liposuction, including tumescent liposuction, the super-wet technique, and ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL). In all types a tiny incision is made in as inconspicuous a place as possible. A cannula (small tube) is inserted and moved back-and-forth beneath the skin, breaking up the fat layer and suctioning it out. Tumescent liposuction and super-wet liposuction use fluid injection, which facilitates fat removal, reduces blood loss, provides anesthesia during and after surgery, and helps to reduce the amount of bruising after surgery. UAL liquefies fat with ultrasonic energy.
Radiation Therapy
Other oncoplastic procedures include breast-conserving surgery that removes the entire tumor, and then displaces nearby breast tissue into the affected area for an improved aesthetic outcome. The benefits to patients are less-invasive cancer treatments and a wider range of reconstruction options, as well as less scarring from surgery. Often a breast reduction is performed after lumpectomy and prior to radiation therapy in women who feel they are too large yet do not want to have a mastectomy. These procedure is usually covered by insurance.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription drug that, when injected, temporarily paralyzes muscles. It contains a purified and safe form of botulinum toxin A, which is produced by the microbe that causes botulism. Manufactured by Allergan, Inc., it is used to treat permanent furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin that are formed by the continual contraction of facial muscles. In addition to its cosmetic applications, it is used to treat a number of medical problems, including excessive sweating, overactive bladder, neck spasms, crossed eyes, chronic back and jaw pain, and migraines.
Brow Lift
Although rhytidectomy removes or reduces signs of aging, over time, they will gradually reappear. Rhytidectomy does not improve the look of the brow, eyelids and nose, and some parts of the mid-face. A patient who wants to improve those areas might combine rhytidectomy with a brow lift or eyelid surgery, and/or with injectable soft-tissue fillers, facial implants and skin resurfacing.
Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a plastic surgery procedure for correcting sagging or drooping eyelids. The eyelid, because its skin is much thinner than that in other parts of the face, is often one of the first areas of the face to exhibit signs of aging. Eyelids that sag or droop can affect peripheral vision, making daily activities such as driving more difficult. Blepharoplasty may become necessary when various factors, which include aging, sun damage, smoking and obesity, cause the muscles and tissue that support the eyelids to weaken.
Liposuction
Liposuction is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a thin, hollow tube called a cannula to remove localized areas of body fat. The cannula is inserted through extremely small incisions, and then moved back and forth to loosen excess fat, which is suctioned out using a vacuum or a cannula-attached syringe. Treated areas look slimmer and more contoured, and in better overall proportion to the rest of the body. However, liposuction is not a method for losing weight, and is not effective in eliminating cellulite, or tightening loose and sagging skin.
Breast Augmentation
Silicone and saline are the two implant types most commonly used in Breast augmentation. Silicone implants feel more like natural breasts than saline ones. However, if a saline implant ruptures, the saline is naturally absorbed by the body, whereas if a silicone implant has a rupture the silicone can cause a capsular contracture or even an enlarged lymph node.
Breast Reduction
Women who are unhappy about having large breasts and/or want to treat symptoms such as back pain, and poor posture, may benefit from reduction mammaplasty (breast reduction), during which fat, glandular tissue and skin are removed from the breasts. The resultant smaller breasts increase patient comfort, and look more in proportion to the rest of the body. Ideal candidates for reduction mammaplasty are women with oversized breasts that are causing medical problems, low self-esteem, and/or physical or social discomfort. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding cannot undergo reduction mammaplasty.
Breast Lift
The aftermath of pregnancy can leave you with sagging breasts, uneven breasts, lost breast volume, drooping nipples and stretched areolas (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). A breast lift, or mastopexy, is performed to reverse these changes and return a youthful shape and lift to your breasts. This is accomplished by trimming excess skin and tightening supporting tissues to achieve an uplifted, youthful contour. Breast lifts after pregnancy can also reduce areolar size and reposition downward-pointing nipples.
Rhinoplasty
In patients with a deviated septum, it is often performed along with septoplasty, a procedure that corrects a deviated septum. In such cases, rhinoplasty effectively treats health and breathing problems, in addition to improving the patient's appearance.

Plastic Surgery
Dr. Daniel Driscoll is a Harvard-trained Plastic Surgeon and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He serves as Chief of Plastic Surgery at Tufts Medical Center and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Surgery at Tufts Medical School. In addition, Dr. Driscoll is an Assistant Professor in Surgery at Harvard Medical School and faculty member of the Harvard residency program in plastic surgery. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Thigh Lift
Thighplasty (thigh lift) is performed to tighten the skin of the thighs, with the goal being to produce slim, contoured thighs that look proportionate to the rest of the body. Thighplasty may be performed alone, or in combination with other cosmetic procedures, such as liposuction, that slim the lower body. Candidates for thighplasty are in good general health, but have excess skin and/or tissue on their thighs as a result of aging, pregnancy or significant weight loss.
Face Lift
Over time, gravity and sun exposure take their toll on the face and neck. Deep creases that run from each side of the nose to the corners of the mouth appear; the jawline slackens; and the neck develops loose folds and fat deposits. Rhytidectomy (facelift) counteracts these signs of aging by tightening muscle, removing fat, and trimming excess skin.
Neck Lift
A neck lift usually takes 2 to 4 hours to perform, and the patient is given either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Most neck lifts are performed on an outpatient basis. Bandages covering incisions are removed after a few days; sutures are typically removed after 7 to 10 days.
Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty tightens the eyelid's muscles and tissue, and removes excess fat and skin. Blepharoplasty eliminates the drooping of skin into the visual field, greatly improving peripheral vision. It is also performed for strictly cosmetic reasons.
Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) helps flatten the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin, and tightening muscles. The best candidates for abdominoplasty are in good physical condition, with pockets of fat or loose skin that have not responded well to diet and exercise. Abdominoplasty can also be appropriate for slightly obese people whose skin has lost some of its elasticity, and for women with skin and muscles stretched from pregnancy. Anyone planning on losing a significant amount of weight, and women planning on having (more) children, should wait before undergoing abdominoplasty.
Nose Surgery
Mentoplasty (chin surgery) is a surgical procedure to reshape the chin by either augmenting or reducing it. Chin implants improve a person's profile by making a "weak" chin look stronger; chin reduction also improves the profile, but removes bone and/or tissue and muscle to do so. To create optimal facial proportion, mentoplasty is often performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty (nose surgery).
Body Lift
Every body lift is different but the classic body lift involves lifting the buttocks, suctioning the lateral thighs and completing an abdominoplasty. During the procedure the patient is repositioned in order to address all the areas described. Excess skin and fat are removed and the skin is sutured closed over drains (surgical tubes).
Breast Surgery
Most patients feel tired and sore after surgery, but this usually passes in a day or two and many patients return to work within a week or two. Any post-operative pain, swelling and sensitivity will diminish over the first few weeks. You should avoid heavy lifting for three to four weeks and only gentle contact with the breasts should occur for six weeks. Does breast surgery cause scarring?
Otoplasty
People of any age who feel self-conscious about their ears may be good candidates for otoplasty, although it is typically performed on children between 4 and 14 years old. Ears are almost fully developed by the of age 4, so early surgery can help create self-confidence when a child begins going to school. Not everyone is a candidate for otoplasty; a patient must be in good general health, and have realistic expectations about what it can do.
Body Contouring
Recognized as an expert in his field, Dr. Driscoll has written numerous articles for medical journals and frequently presents at national society meetings such as the American Burn Association, and the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons. He has made local and national presentations on topics such as complex nasal reconstruction, scalp tissue expansion, ear reconstruction, innovations in cosmetic breast surgery, and international burn care. In addition to cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries of the face, breasts and abdomen, Dr. Driscoll has worked extensively in both burn reconstruction and body contouring after massive weight loss.
Laser Resurfacing
Modern technology provides a variety of successful laser resurfacing treatments for improving the condition of the skin. Laser skin treatments employ focused beams of light energy to counteract the effects on the skin of acne, aging, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, scars, or poor nutrition. Resurfacing laser treatments are safe and efficient, requiring little downtime to provide effective results.
Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia, which is the overdevelopment of male breasts, affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. It can be the result of hormonal imbalance, obesity, certain drugs or heredity, and can affect one or both breasts.
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is not effective for removing congenital marks, pigmented birthmarks, scars from burns, and certain types of moles.
Facial Implants
Chin Augmentation
Mentoplasty that augments the chin takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour to perform. Either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia is used. During the procedure, an incision is made inside the mouth, which eliminates visible scarring. A pocket is created for the implant (typically made of semi-solid silicone), which is then placed and positioned in front of the jawbone. Once in place, the implant is secured with sutures. When an incision in the mouth is not possible, it is made underneath the chin so that the scar is not apparent. The patient returns home the same day.

Dermabrasion can be performed at almost any age, with light-skinned people achieving more successful results than those with darker skin. Before undergoing dermabrasion, patients with active acne should have existing lesions treated to reduce the risk of infection.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin to make skin smoother, reduce scarring and remove blemishes. Ranging from mild to strong, there are three types of chemical peels: alphahydroxy acid (AHA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and phenol. The strength of each peel is tailored to the patient. Peels can be combined with other procedures, such as facelifts, for additional improvement to skin. Chemical peels may be covered by insurance if they are performed for medical rather than cosmetic reasons.
