Dr. DeVito specializes in contact lenses, children’s vision care, ocular disease and primary eye care. An active member of the Tidewater Optometric Society, the Virginia Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association, he is licensed to treat eye diseases including glaucoma. Dr. DeVito and his wife, Michelle have three children.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a chronic, progressive disease that gradually destroys sharp central vision due to a deterioration of the macula, a tiny spot in the central portion of your retina comprised of millions of light-sensing cells. Because it is so commonly associated with aging, it is also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). There are two forms of AMD called “dry,” most common and with no known treatment, and “wet,” less common and treated with laser procedures. Genetic testing is now available to help identify those most likely to develop “wet” macular degeneration.
Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure that uses a laser beam to reshape the cornea. Patients who are nearsighted, farsighted or astigmatic may benefit from this type of procedure.
Cataracts
With the wide variety of lens options available, you can customize your “sunnies” (sunglasses) to meet your visual, protection, performance and comfort needs. Sunglasses protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is present even on cloudy days. Quality sun wear provides 100 percent UV protection and can significantly reduce the risk of vision problems caused by sunlight such as cataracts and retinal damage.

Your medical insurance (BCBS) is billed if you have a medical eye complaint or condition. This includes conditions such as dry eye syndrome, allergic conjunctivitis, viral conjunctivitis (pink eye), cataracts, glacuoma, and macular degeneration. Your medical insurance will also be billed if you have a medical condition that affects the health of the eyes (diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, etc.), as this will result in a medical eye health evaluation.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic eye disease is a general term for a group of eye problems that can result from having type 1 or type 2 diabetes, including diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and glaucoma. The Optomap can check for abnormalities in the eyes Often there are no symptoms in the early stages of diabetic eye disease, so it is important that you don’t wait for symptoms to appear before having a comprehensive eye exam. Early detection and treatment of diabetic eye disease will dramatically reduce your chances of sustaining permanent vision loss.
