The common technique used overseas involves removing much of the Conjunctiva, the normal covering of the eye and then letting new tissue grow back, theoretically giving a whiter and cleaner look to the eye. The eye is also treated with a powerful anti-cancer medicine called Mitomycin. Mitomycin is commonly used in Ophthalmology but there’s a fine line when using it: it can be therapeutic as well as dangerous.
Macular Degeneration
You may have heard about the evils of blue light for the eyes and how blue-blocking eyeglass lenses will protect you from developing age-related macular degeneration.
Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK surgery (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a laser vision correction procedure of the eye that can correct nearsightedness (myopia) and farsightedness (hyperopia), as well as cure astigmatism.
Cataracts
If you love the great outdoors, the feeling of the sun upon your face, the earth between your toes, and the breeze through your hair, you may have noticed that after a number of the years, all that sun can start to get to your body a little. Specifically, UV radiation is known to affect the cells of our body, resulting in that well-weathered look – sun spots on the skin, wrinkles, and also pterygia and cataracts.
Cataract Surgery
In the early to moderate stages of a cataract, you may find that keeping your eye glasses or contacts up to date is enough to keep your vision happy. However, if the cataract progresses further, eventually your glasses and contacts won’t be enough to give you adequate vision for what you like to do. At this point, you may consider cataract surgery.
Eye Exam
If you’ve just been hit in the eye, you probably know why, but what you might not know is the impact the blow may have had on your eyeball structures. Even an apparently light amount of force can still result in damage that may only become evident later with a comprehensive eye exam. For this reason, always get your eye checked out by an eye-care professional. The urgency of this can depend on your immediate symptoms. For example, loss of all or any part of your vision, bleeding around the eye socket, the eyeball appearing sunken within the socket, flashing lights or floating specks in your vision, double vision or feeling like your eye movements are restricted, should all go straight to emergency. Otherwise, if it seems like the worst of it is just a black eye and a bruised ego from missing that catch of the ball, gently apply a clean cold compress to manage swelling and pain, and then see your local eye-care professional within the next day or so.
