Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an eye disease that is most commonly caused by elevated pressure inside the eye-Intraocular Pressure (IOP)-that damages the optic nerve and causes loss of vision. Glaucoma can begin without any symptoms or obvious loss of vision and if not diagnosed early, treated properly and controlled, it will result in permanent vision loss and potentially blindness.

Macular Degeneration
At Nevyas Eye Associates/Moore Eye Institute, our ophthalmologists offer Philadelphia and Delaware Valley patients comprehensive care for the diagnosis and treatment of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Macular Degeneration is an incurable eye disease and is the leading cause of legal blindness for those aged 55 and older in the United States, affecting more than 10 million Americans in some fashion. Your chances of developing AMD are directly related to your age. The older you are, the greater the chance that macular degeneration will affect you. The macula is responsible for providing central vision which is the sharpest or clearest area of your vision and is required for activities such as seeing fine detail of faces, reading and recognizing colors. The macula provides you with the precise vision required for driving a car and is responsible for central or “straight ahead” vision. The visual effects of macular degeneration can be relatively minimal with a mild “dimming” or “distortion” of your central vision, or very profound resulting in a complete loss of your central vision. There are two main types of Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Dry Macular Degeneration and Wet Macular Degeneration. It is important to understand the similarities and differences between these types of Macular Degeneration.

Cataracts
Cataracts are a common cause of vision problems among people in their 50’s and 60’s and the most common cause of vision loss in seniors. More than 20 million people above 40 years of age and more than half of those above age 80 suffer from cataracts. For many patients, development of cataracts starts slowly and has little effect on vision. But as a cataract becomes denser, the symptoms begin to impact vision, driving, and overall quality of life.
Cataract Surgery
Lens Replacement Surgery is a procedure very similar to cataract surgery, in that your surgeon is removing the natural crystalline lens and replacing it with a new, artificial lens. The difference is that with cataract surgery, the lens is being replaced because it has become “cloudy”. With Lens Replacement Surgery, the crystalline lens is being removed and replaced because it is not of proper strength to allow you to see clearly without having to rely on glasses.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic eye disease and in particular diabetic retinopathy represents a major challenge for patients in our diabetic community. The eye doctors at Nevyas Eye Associates/Moore Eye Institute provide examination, diagnosis and treatment of diabetic eye problems including diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic Retinopathy is the most frequent cause of new cases of blindness among adults aged 20-74 years. However, with early diagnosis and treatment, progression of the disease and its associated vision loss can at a minimum be slowed, and in many cases vision loss from diabetic retinopathy can be prevented.

Ulcer
It is possible for bacteria, viruses or fungi to penetrate the cornea and cause an infection. An infection of the cornea is called Keratitis or a Corneal Ulcer. This can cause a painful inflammation with a discharge. If this is not treated quickly and appropriately, it may lead to corneal scarring or even loss of the eye
