Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the United States, especially for older people. But the loss of sight from glaucoma is usually preventable if you get treatment early enough. Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve. The optic nerve carries the images we see to the brain. Many people know that glaucoma has something to do with the pressure inside the eye.
Ophthalmology
Dr. Khanna graduated from a seven year BA/MD program at Temple University and Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. While there, she was nominated into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, which acknowledges medical students in the top of each graduating class. Dr. Khanna then went on to complete her medical internship at Pennsylvania Hospital, a UPenn affiliate. She completed her Ophthalmology residency at Brown University, during which she traveled nationally and internationally to several large academic conferences for her research endeavors. Dr. Khanna completed her training at the University of Maryland for a Cornea and External Disease fellowship where she learned from leaders in the field.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a deterioration or breakdown of the macula. The disease breaks down the macula, the light-sensitive part of the retina responsible for the sharp, direct vision needed to read or drive. When the macula does not function correctly, your central vision can be affected by blurriness, dark areas or distortion.
Laser Eye Surgery
During LASIK, you will receive numbing eye drops. There is no pain during LASIK, and the most youâ€™ll feel is a slight pressure. LASIK involves reshaping the cornea so light can get through properly. Reshaping the cornea is what corrects refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. To reshape the cornea, a small flap, like a trap door, is first created with a femtosecond laser.
Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding of the eyeâ€™s natural lens, which lies behind the iris and the pupil. The lens is a clear oval structure with three layers: the nucleus, the cortex, and the capsule. The lens works much like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina at the back of the eye. The lens also adjusts the eyeâ€™s focus, letting us see things clearly both up close and far away. You have a cataract when the nucleus becomes yellow and cloudy.

Eye Exam
A complete eye exam is necessary to diagnose hyperopia. Since these tests are not offered at school you should have your childâ€™s eyes examined routinely by an eye health provider. The professionals at The Nielsen Eye Center can conduct a refractive evaluation to determine whether your eyes focus light rays exactly on the retina at distance and near. A visual acuity test will determine your ability to see sharply and clearly at all distances. During your examination, we will also check your eye coordination and muscle control, as well as your eyesâ€™ ability to change focus. All of these are important factors in how your eyes see.

Radiology
When you get services from an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center, certain providers there may be out-of-network. In these cases, the most those providers may bill you is your planâ€™s in-network cost-sharing amount. This applies to emergency medicine, anesthesia, pathology, radiology, laboratory, neonatology, assistant surgeon, hospitalist, or intensivist services. Eyelid Surgery
An eyelid procedure is considered functional when it is performed to improve vision function. If an individualâ€™s eyelids are interfering with everyday activities and causing difficulty seeing, the procedure may be covered by insurance. To determine the degree of vision loss caused by drooping eyelids, Dr. Moreira may perform a Visual Field test. Upper eyelid surgery is commonly considered medical in nature.

A blepharoplasty, also commonly referred to as an eyelid lift or eyelid surgery, is one of the most common medical and cosmetic surgeries performed on the face. It is effective at giving a more youthful appearance without the trauma of a major facelift. Blepharoplasty can help patients to look and feel better and can improve peripheral vision in those whose eyelids may block or impact their line of sight.

As we age, we begin to notice drooping of our eyelids, which not only makes us appear older and tired; it can also lead to some loss of our peripheral vision. The procedure known as Blepharoplasty is the removal of excess skin, fat and muscle that has weakened the eyelid over time.

Dr. Rodney Immerman is a certified Optometrist and has been practicing exclusively low vision since 1982. He is a graduate of the Illinois College of Optometry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. He has spent the last 34 years designing low vision devices for reading, distance, occupational and recreational tasks. He also designs low vision glasses for driving and computer use and prescribes electronic magnification devices for reading. He refers patients, as necessary, to low vision occupational therapy and to appropriate state agencies and organizations to maximize their function.
