Osteoporosis is a disease in which bone density decreases, making bones brittle and prone to fractures. It is estimated that at age 50, a woman has nearly a 40% chance of developing an osteoporotic fracture during her remaining lifetime. A woman’s lifetime risk of hip fracture alone is equal to the combined risk of developing breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer. Women who suffer hip fractures are up to 20% are more likely to die within one year of the fracture than those of a similar age who haven’t suffered a hip fracture. It is, therefore, important for women to identify their risk for developing osteoporosis.

Ultrasound
Ultrasound imaging, also called sonography, involves exposing part of the body to high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. Ultrasound exams are safe and non-invasive, and do not use ionizing radiation (X-ray). Since ultrasound images are captured in real time, they can show the structure and movement of the body’s internal organs, as well as blood flowing through blood vessels. Ultrasound imaging is usually a painless medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.
MRI
A CT scan is considered a safe examination. While CT imaging does use radiation, the diagnostic benefits of the procedure generally outweigh the risks of radiation exposure. Unlike an MRI exam, CT scans can even be performed if you have a pacemaker. However, pregnant women should consult their doctor before the exam. He or she may suggest an alternative form of imaging to avoid exposing the fetus to radiation.

Nuclear medicine is a type of imaging that uses radioactive materials (called tracers) to identify and diagnose diseases and abnormalities within the body.
