Having social support can be beneficial during the quitting process. Group programs are also available to help transition this period. Hypnosis and acupuncture are popular smoking cessation methods, although there is little scientific evidence to support their effectiveness.

Electrocardiogram
A cardiopulmonary exercise test is a specialized form of stress testing done to assess the response of your heart and lungs to exercise. The test is done on a treadmill. Your heart (EKG), blood pressure, oxygen level and breathing will be monitored while you walk on the treadmill. You will breathe through a mouthpiece during your test. A pulmonary physician is always present in the office when testing takes place in the unlikely event you should experience any difficulties during your testing. As with any type of exercise, there is a remote possibility of serious medical problems related to changes in blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, fainting, etc. The length of the test is tailored to each patient. The treadmill starts at a very slow speed. Depending on your ability, the speed and grade (steepness) of the treadmill will be gradually increased. You will be asked to walk as long as you can, but can stop at any time you experience symptoms that make it impossible for you to continue. You will be monitored for a few minutes after you stop walking on the treadmill. Your doctor will review the test results with you at your next visit.

Lung Cancer
Berks Respiratory Specialist is proud to announce a new program designed to help identify and screen high risk patients for lung cancer. This program is based on recommendations from the National Lung Screening Trial completed by the National Cancer Institute. Screening involves eligible participants undergoing a yearly low-dose cat scan (LDCT) of the chest each year to identify if cancer may be present. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) refers to high blood pressure isolated to the lungs. Pulmonary pressures are only measured precisely through invasive right heart catheterization, but can be estimated through an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound). Normal pulmonary pressures are 25 mmHg over 10 mmHg with a mean of 8-20 mmHg. Pulmonary hypertension occurs when the mean pulmonary artery pressure is greater than or equal to 25 mmHg.

The patient must first be placed in the appropriate classification group discussed above. A pulmonologist usually performs this evaluation and classifies the patient in the appropriate group. Tests to evaluate for heart disease including echocardiograms are often ordered. Further testing of lung disease including pulmonary function studies and sleep studies may also be ordered. Tests to exclude thromboembolic diseases like lung scans or lung CT scans are often necessary. If PAH is suspected, a right heart catheterization is required. If PAH is confirmed, tests to look for causes including blood tests for scleroderma, test for HIV, liver test are often performed.
Chemotherapy
Lung cancer evaluation is usually carried out by a pulmonologist often after a referral for an x-ray abnormality discovered by a family physician. The pulmonologist may consult other physicians including surgeons, radiation oncologists, chemotherapy oncologists based on what treatments are needed for the type and stage of cancer.
Radiation Therapy
Smoking is the major risk factor for lung cancer, increasing the risk over 20 times that of non-smokers. Quitters lower their cancer risks slowly over 15 years but always remain 2 times more likely to develop cancer than non-smokers. Other risks include: secondhand smoke, radon, asbestos, radiation therapy, arsenic, nickel, chromium. Genetic factors and pulmonary fibrosis also increase lung cancer risk.

Smoking cessation is associated with significant health benefits for smokers of all ages. Smoking cessation can reduce the risk of developing heart diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), many types of cancer, peptic ulcer disease, pregnancy complications, osteoporosis, and premature menopause. In addition, a large number of smokers with cough and phlegm production have an improvement in symptoms after quitting. Smoking cessation has also been connected to improvement in asthma and a decrease in the risk of several types of infections.
