Richard Louv, author of the best-selling book “The Last Child in the Woods” and coiner of the term “nature deficit disorder,” is all for these prescribing patterns. “I think that physicians can do more [to get people out into nature] than any other professional,” he said. Louv’s book and Web site ( http://www.childrenandnature.org ) cite dozens of studies documenting the positive impact that wilderness outings can have on mental and physical health. The fact that the American Academy of Pediatrics has invited Louv to deliver the keynote address at its 2010 annual meeting indicates that the larger medical community is starting to recognize the therapeutic value of time spent in the woods.
Primary Care
Kate Hodgson, a veterinarian at the University of Toronto’s medical school, has written extensively about integrating the One Health approach into a medical visit. She recommends that primary care physicians routinely ask about family pets and consider collaborating with the family veterinarian, as long as patients give their permission.

To answer L’s question, I looked up the guidelines for HPV vaccination put out by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), a group of medical experts that determines which vaccines we should use in the United States. Despite the FDA’s recent approval of the vaccine for women up to age 45, I saw no mention of women over age 26 in the ACIP guidelines.

There is also strong evidence that lutein and zeaxanthin protect against age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in the United States and most industrialized countries. Neuroscientists are discovering that we need an adequate stockpile of xanthophylls to reason, learn new things and ward off dementia. Two newly published studies suggest that low blood levels of L/Z can be a harbinger of frailty — the inability to bounce back from an illness — in older adults.

Not so fast, cautioned Karen Smith-McCune, professor emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California at San Francisco. She is an HPV researcher and works in the cervical dysplasia clinic taking care of women infected with HPV.

Then I moved to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology website to see what it said about HPV vaccination for older women. ACOG’s Practice Advisory encourages me to “welcome conversations” with women up to age 45 and that “any decision to be vaccinated should be individually based using shared decision making and clinical judgment based on those patients’ circumstances, preferences, and concerns.”

Cervical Cancer
But L had a number of partners in her early 20s followed by many years of monogamy. Does the vaccine make sense for her and the roughly 30 million other women under 46 who missed the opportunity to get the HPV shots as kids? After all, studies show that most women get exposed to at least one strain of HPV within a couple of years after first having sex and that the likelihood of exposure increases with each sexual partner. While most women clear their infections within 12 to 24 months, a small percentage go on to develop cervical precancers or cancers — which is why cervical cancer screening is important.

Dr. Miller sampled ndole - a stew made of dried bitterleaf, shrimp, peanuts and spices like ginger and garlic - in Cameroon, which has little incidence of colon cancer.
Interstitial Cystitis
According to Bartges, feline idiopathic cystitis is an example of a vexing animal health issue that can give us a peek into our own psychology. Cats with idiopathic cystitis don’t have a urinary tract infection, but they have blood in the urine, fuss a lot, frequently use the litter box and urinate around the house. (With the exception of the litter box issue, this sounds exactly like interstitial cystitis, a health issue I see often in my female human patients.)

My biggest “aha moment” was realizing that there are many ways to eat a healthy diet. Everyone—from vegetable lovers to “meat hounds”—can find a nourishing traditional diet that matches their taste buds.Other surprises: In Okinawa, a Japanese island widely known for its people’s longevity and low rates of breast and prostate cancer, fish certainly is part of their healthy diet, but pork is a favorite food. Iceland is notable for unusually low rates of depression and this may be thanks to a diet abundant in omega-3-rich foods, such as fish, wild berries and grass-fed lamb.

Indeed, because we have good screening in the United States, cervical cancer incidence and death rates were low even before the introduction of the HPV vaccine in 2006. In 2017, about 4,000 women died of the disease. (For reference, 41,000 die of breast cancer and 66,000 of lung cancer). Compare that with some low-income countries, such as Malawi or Bolivia, where screening is practically unobtainable and the mortality rate from cervical cancer is three to four times higher.

Personally, the way I find food that is the most delicious and nutritious is I get to know the farmers or at least the story of the farm. I always like to know that the farmer lives on that farm. The other way is that I look at the fruits and vegetables. We all intuitively know when these are coming from healthy soils. They don’t look like they are on steroids or just had plastic surgery to make them look all exactly the same.

Take your chronic sniffles, for example. If you suspect they might be caused by allergies, you might want to see whether your symptons are shared by the family dog. According to a recent study from Finland, urban living, small family size, and disconnection from nature and other animals was linked to a higher risk for allergy in humans and their dogs. (Allergic dogs get canine atopic dermatitis, which is a kind of doggy eczema.) On the other hand, dogs and their owners who lived on a farm or in a household with many animals and children, or regularly visited a forest, were protected from allergies.

Web site: “I don’t recommend kombucha tea at all. I know of no scientific studies backing up the health claims made for it.” He goes on to warn of home brews contaminated with aspergillus, a toxin-producing fungus, and cautions pregnant women, the elderly, children and anyone with a compromised immune system against drinking it.
