New Construction
Demolition
NJ Transit undertook the initiative to replace/repair several of their bridges on the Raritan Valley Line. The Clinton & Plainfield Avenue railroad bridges were in close proximity to each other and similar in scope. IEW Construction undertook these two bridges under the same contract. Like the other NJ Transit Bridges IEW did at this time, these bridges were a multi-phased project requiring a contractor experienced and skilled in the intricacies of the work entailed. A soldier pile sheeting system was driven to support demolition activities. The existing bridge was remediated for lead, and then taken apart and removed in phases as a temporary bridge was built so that there were no disturbances in the train schedule. The Clinton & Plainfield Avenue railroad bridges are eligible for listing on the state and national registers of historic places as a contributing resource to the Central Railroad of New Jersey Main Line Historic District. Due to the historic nature of the project, the steel and masonry work were preserved to the maximum extent possible. Steel and fasteners were fabricated and installed in accordance with the historic defining characteristics. Structural concrete in parts of the abutment was cast in place to replace deteriorating masonry, and the large stone masonry wingwalls were repaired and repointed.

Landscaping and Fencing

Fencing
The $18.5-million rehabilitation project of Allentown’s 8th Street Bridge, began May 2014 and is scheduled for completion in 2016. IEWâ€™s work will include replacing the bridge deck, constructing new alcoves, repairing bridge piers, reconstructing roadway approaches, installing new ornamental lighting, concrete curbing, concrete sidewalk, protective fencing, pavement markings and signs.

Excavation
Pipe Jacking is a trenchless method of installing pipe without disruption to the live traffic. While convenient to motorists, this construction method requires highly skilled individuals and specialized equipment. Due to the depth of the method, as well as the live traffic conditions, careful consideration must be given to shoring and support to the excavation at either side of the road as well monitoring of the roadway. IEW Construction Group managed the installation of 30â€ reinforced concrete pipe beneath 6 lanes of busy NJ Turnpike highway for multiple NJTA 6-9 Widening contracts.
Retaining Walls
From Long Branch to Sandy Hook, Hurricane Sandy surged over the rock retaining walls, displacing 6â€™ of beach sand onto Route 36, rendering it impassable and trapping the residents in the homes lining the roadway. Under an NJDOT maintenance contract, IEW Construction Group portioned and sifted the sand from the storm debris, hoisted it over the wall and then broadcasted back on to the beach. The road was cleaned and opened to traffic in 7 days.

Decks
This project in the City of Newark was undertaken by the New Jersey Department of Transportation to replace the superstructures of these two adjacent bridges spanning the New Jersey Transit electrified Morristown Line and I-280. This project includes many challenges including working within the close confines of the City, coordination with the many utilities that use these structures to span the highway and railroad and the close coordination required with NJ Transit to work over their electrified railroad without a disruption of service. IEW crews are utilizing an innovative “roll-out-roll-in” method to remove the existing superstructures and install the new decks.

Masonry
IEW Construction Group was called upon for an emergency masonry repair due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy on one of the piers of the Raritan River Bridge. IEW Construction Group was able to reset and repoint the stone work as well as provide integrity to the structure.
